Using CPAP For Sleep Apnoea

Hi All,

Have been recently (last week) diagnosed with sleep apnoea, am waiting for a CPAP machine, have been told to excercise, but am just too tired; bit of a vicious circle really, however I have been told that I will feel more like excercising when I get the CPAP.

Has anyone used a CPAP machine, and does it really make you feel as awake as the doctors say?

Snoring in young children?

My 3 year old daughter has snored for a long time.. Even when she doesn’t have a cold she snores – and she sometimes snores when she is not quite asleep (ie when she is in bed ready to fall asleep). Other people have commented on this when they have babysat or when she has been asleep in her pram during the day. She even breathes loudly through her mouth sometimes if she is sitting and concentrating on something.

She also has what I think is sleep apnoea – she stops breathing for up to 10 secs then takes a big gasp in and then starts snoring again.

She isn’t sleepy during the day but she rarely goes through the night without waking at least twice.

I have been to the doctors twice about this and they have checked her tonsils and looked at her adenoids but say they are normal – and they wouldn’t take either of these out unless she gets recurring ear infections (which she doesn’t)

i dont want her to have an unnecessary operation but ive heard that continuous snoring / sleep apnoea can cause heart problems..

Probably just being an anxious mum but has anyone got a similar problem?

Thanks
just for info – my daughter is not overweight at all, she has a really good diet – 3 proper meals a day with loads of fruit inbetween.
thanks very much for your answers – i checked my daughters tonsils last night and they were huge! Went to doctors today and he saw them and said they were enourmous but not infected – so its not tonsillitus – so we are being referred to an ENT specialist – thanks again

Is sleep apnoea covered by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995?

If a person suffers from sleep apnoea, would the definition of disabled according to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 cover them?
Sleep apnoea is a genetic condition which basically prevents people from sleeping properly. The condition is like this. The sufferer has little muscle tone in the throat which leads to a collapse of the airway during sleep. The sufferer then stops breathing until the body's 'alarm' system kicks in and there is a sudden shock snore (the apnoea) and the sufferer has a micro arousal or even wakes up. I have this condition at a chronic level, 85 times an hour, so I am exhausted all day as I never really sleep properly at night – result – while working I am liable to simply go to sleep.
If you imagine working all day, going home and when you're just about to go to bed there is an emergency, and you end up staying (awake) in the accident and emergency unit at the local hospital, and you finally get to go home at 6 am, just in time to get ready for work. At 5pm that day, you feel sick with fatigue. That's me. That's how I feel everyday. For a few years.

Sleep Apnoea…do you have to report it to the DVLA?

My friend has just called me and is distressed as she was told she possibly has sleep apnoea and must stop driving immediately and report it to the DVLA. Is this correct? My mother has severe sleep apnoea (to the point where she suffered a cardiac arrest), but she was never told she had to stop driving.

Thanks in anticipation of your answers
